On the second and final day of the 2011 Billabong Surfing Hainan Open, Australian Craig Colbran pleased the judges with his seasoned, stylistic surfing. With surf in the chest- to shoulder-high range, Colbran beat out Guo Hengliang (Taiwan), Barret Seymour (USA), and Rory MacDonald (Taiwan).
“The waves definitely picked up on the second day, and I was stoked to get as many good rides as I did. I’ve been coming to this comp for four years now, and I’m really happy to have captured the title,” remarked Colbran.
In Women’s Shortboard, Hung Chechun beat out fellow Taiwanese surfer in the two-woman final. If a second place in the shortboard wasn’t enough for Wenling, she also won first place in Women’s Longboarding, besting Darci Liu (China).
The Men’s Longboard event went to Chen Dongming (Taiwan), with Mongolian native Tie Zhuang in close second. Daniel Lau (Hawaii) came in third, and Riyuewan local Huang Wen came in third.

Skullcandy event staff poured shots of vodka down their skull-shaped ice block luge to get help the party atmosphere. Billabong representatives from Singapore and Hainan were on hand to help with the event and to network with China’s surf community. On Day One of the 2011 Billabong Surfing Hainan Open, belly- to chest-high waves rolled into Riyuewan throughout the day. Contestants from over ten different nations made the best of the conditions. With mostly longboard heats running in the first day, there were some standout performances from the Chinese competitors.
Inner Mongolian surfer Tie Zhuang was spectacular, with the best nose rides of the day. Huang Wen who grew up on the Riyuewan beach, was a whole different surfer from the previous year’s competition, slinging his longboard around with ease. Tie Zhuang and Huang Wen will compete against Daniel Lau of Hawaii and Chen Tongming of Taiwan for the Men’s Longboard title.
In the women’s longboard division, Darci Liu and Chou Wenling both won their heats, advancing to the finals to be held tomorrow.
In the only final held on the first day, the Under-16s went to Rory Macdonald. Both Rory and Chang Fengchu, both from Taiwan, had some of the best maneuvers of the day.

Record Number of Chinese Surfers to Compete in 4th Annual Billabong Surfing Hainan Open
The 2011 Billabong Surfing Hainan Open will be held this weekend, December 3rd and 4th. For the first time in its four-year history, Chinese competitors will be the majority, with nearly twenty Chinese surfers from the mainland, Hong Kong, and Taiwan coming to participate.
Tie Zhuang, a Mongolian transplant who has been surfing in Hainan for the last four years, will be a surfer to watch as he displays his versatility and style in both the shortboard and longboard divisions. He has been riding for Billabong’s Hainan team over a year, while pushing his skill level as he begins to charge larger surf while maintaining his finesse.
The two best Chinese surfers at the Billabong Surfing Hainan Open will qualify for wildcard slots in the ASP 4-Star Men’s Shortboard event in January 2012. Tie Zhuang will have his eyes on the prize as he contends for one of these positions.
As will Huang Moyu, a 24-year-old Xiamen native who moved to Hainan to attend university in 2006. Moyu’s slicing carves are fun to watch, and show how comfortable he is on the rail.
Eight surfers will be making their way from Taiwan, and will have amongst their ranks entrants in to all of the five divisions – Men’s Shortboard and Longboard, Women’s Shortboard and Longboard, and Under-16s. Skilled Shortboarder Guo Hengliang will give Tie Zhuang and Moyu a run for their money as he tries to capture on of the wildcard slots.
In Women’s Longboarding, local Skullcandy team rider Darci Liu will hope to capture a top placement, which will mean trying to best Taiwan’s Zhou Wenling.
The Billabong Surfing Hainan Open looks to hold its reputation as Hainan’s biggest weekend beach festival. Hainan Beer will keep the beer flowing, while the Bo’Ao Bed and Breakfast will serve pancakes, and Sanya’s Dolphin Bar will serve grilled hamburgers throughout the day.
The Sanya Cricket Club will hold their monthly match on the beach while the surfers compete in the water.

Billabong Confirmed as Presenting Sponsor for 4th Annual Surfing Hainan Open
Hainan’s premier surf competition will be held over the 3rd and 4th of December. International surf brand Billabong will be the presenting sponsor for the event, now in it’s fourth year, and headphones brand Skull Candy will come aboard as co-sponsor.
The Surfing Hainan Open will take place in Riyuewan, a coastal area on Hainan’s southeast coast. An hour’s drive from Sanya, it is one of Hainan’s best places for surfing. The competitors will seek to better each other on Riyuewan’s left-hand point break, which frequently sees days of head-high surf during the fall and winter, when Northeast swells are prevalent.
The number of Chinese competitors in the Surfing Hainan Open has more than doubled every year. While only one Chinese national entered the fist Surfing Hainan Open, this year there will be fifteen Chinese.
Competing for her third time is Hubei native Darci Liu. A former ballerina, she brings a lot of grace and style to her longboarding. Regarding the Surfing Hainan Open, Darci said “I love this event because it gives local surfers a chance to get the experience of competing.”
Competing for his fourth time is Moyu Huang, a Xi’an native who started surfing four years ago when he moved to Sanya for university. “I look forward to this competition every year. It’s a great chance for surfers around China and Asia to come together.”
Peter Thew, Brand Manager from Billabong’s head Asia office in Singapore said “We are excited to get behind this years event. Hainan Island has all that a tropical surf destination needs; beautiful beaches, great weather, and some really decent surf… it’ll be great to see this event grow over the years”.
Billabong previously sponsored Surfing Hainan’s SUP and Run Biathlon earlier this year, as did headphones brand Skull Candy, who are co-sponsoring the Surfing Hainan Open. Brand Manager Elijah Kislevitz , an old hand in China’s extreme sports industry, said “The Surfing Hainan Open is a perfect match for our brand – making progressive change to really bring surfing to China.”
The event will feature three disciplines of shortboard, longboard, and stand up paddleboard, with separate divisions for men and women. The Surfing Hainan Open is popular with expat surfers living in China, and many of the competitors this year have competed multiple times in the years past. Vaughn Hill, a New Zealander living in Hong Kong who has come to every event, said “We get our Hong Kong surf crew together to make the trip over to Hainan for the competition. It’s always a great time, getting to catch up with my fellow surfers around Asia. No matter how I place, it’s a fun weekend of waves and seeing old friends.”
Hainan Beer will sponsor the event for the third time, with ice cold beers available on the beach throughout the event.
